The Wheels Within Wheels

Ezekiel 1:15–16

A wheel within a wheel beside the living creatures

Now as I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, one for each of the four of them. As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction: their appearance was like the gleaming of beryl. And the four had the same likeness, their appearance and construction being as it were a wheel within a wheel.

— Ezekiel 1:15–16 (ESV)

Ezekiel 1:18

The rims of the wheels full of eyes

And their rims were tall and awesome, and the rims of all four were full of eyes all around.

— Ezekiel 1:18 (ESV)

The Ophanim — from the Hebrew ophan meaning “wheel” — are perhaps the most alien and awe-inspiring entities described in the Bible. They appear in Ezekiel's vision as vast, intersecting wheels of light that move in concert with the cherubim, forming part of God's living chariot-throne.

Their construction defies ordinary geometry: a wheel set within a wheel at right angles, allowing them to move in any direction without turning. They gleam like beryl — a sea-green precious stone — and their enormous rims are studded with countless eyes, suggesting omniscient awareness in every direction.

The spirit of the living creatures resides within the wheels; when the cherubim move, the wheels move. When the cherubim rise from the earth, the wheels rise alongside them. They are inseparable from the cherubim, functioning as the foundation of God's mobile throne. In Ezekiel 10:13, they are called out to directly: “As for the wheels, they were called in my hearing 'the whirling wheels.'” They represent the unfathomable, ever-moving presence of God — simultaneously mechanical and alive, geometric and terrifying.
